Well, no, I suppose not.

I was set up on a few dates when I was away at university. They were never anything that worked out, however. I usually don't go looking for anyone, otherwise.

[Derek lets out a snort.]

I never went looking for anyone I dated. They just appeared in my life unexpectedly. Some I was instantly attracted to, other times it took me some time to figure out I wanted to ask them out.

[Derek voice suddenly turns bitter.]

And then there are ones like my ex where I was instantly attracted to her but I had to wait over eight months to ask her out because she had a bloody boyfriend at the time.

...There are some people I don't even bother with, and people already attached to someone else are a strong subset.

[Like, really, why would you even put yourself through that.]

[Derek shrugs.]

I was nineteen and I thought I had found perfection. Can you blame me? I mean, her hair was crazy bushy, but her brain... ugh she was so smart...

I don't know, I was a bit too introverted to want to date much in high school, and once I was out of it I didn't really have anyone I felt any sort of connection to.

True, it's important to feel a connection with someone if you want to try to date them seriously. I can understand that.

[Another sip of his beer.]

Then what attracts you to a person?

I...haven't really given it much thought, to be honest.

[His dating life is a nonexistent, nonexistent mess, Derek.]

You're 28 and you don't know what turns you on?

W-Well, like I said, it's not as though I've been looking for anyone...

[Derek lets out a chuckle and then takes a swig of his beer.]

I'm only joking you know. It's really none of my business if you date or not. I'm... just surprised.

What's so surprising about it...? I'm fairly sure you've noticed that I'm not the most social person on the planet. For the love of god, my life revolves around paperwork and I'm happy about it.

[Derek lets out a laugh.]

It's just that most men will not what kind of person they're into by the time they're our age. Or at least, think they do.

[A beat.]

Are you saying you would rather do paperwork than go on a date. Like a date with a non-crazy person?

...It depends on how interesting the non-crazy person is.

Well, what makes a person interesting to you?

If I didn't know any better, I'd think you were trying to set me up.

Well, I can't do that if I don't know what kind of person you find interesting. So answer the question: Why type of person do you find interesting?

If I were really that interested, I'm sure I could find someone - somebody actually tried to set me up a while ago, though not much has come of it...

Who did they try to set you up with? I mean, did they know you as well as I do?

In fairness, no, they don't...

See Alex, that was your problem. You didn't have ME helping you out. Shouldn't you have a friend that actually KNOWS you be the one to set you up?

Well, now I'm just wondering who you would throw on me, based on what you know already.

[Derek's quiet for a moment, mainly because there isn't anyone that comes to mind. Oops.]

Well... do you prefer guys or girls? Or both?

Well, I prefer men. Though I won't completely rule out women, either.
